8-Day Traditional Cheetah Safari Visiting Aberdares, Samburu, L. Nakuru/Naivasha and Masai Mara

A traditional seven-night safari visiting Samburu, home to unique wildlife, followed by the Rift Valley Lakes.

The final destination is the Masai Mara where vast numbers of plains game and spectacular big cats abide.

This itinerary starts in the Aberdares Range followed by Samburu, home to some of the most unique wildlife in Kenya and a host of birds. Your stay is at the deluxe Ashnil Samburu Camp, spread out along the shady banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, under a thick stand of doum palms and acacia trees that are a feature of the area.

Safari route takes you to Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. Around Lake Nakuru a game reserve has been created where the endangered black rhino is protected and may be seen along with antelope, giraffes, lions and hyenas.

Finally, the magnificent Masai Mara, famed for its vast numbers of plains game and the spectacular big cats. Here you stay in the luxury Ashnil Mara Camp, which offers an unrivalled position for wildlife spotting, and is close to the action during the annual wildebeest migration.

The Aberdare Country Club, only a two and a half hour drive northeast from Nairobi, is nestled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was the homestead of an English couple that decided to settle in Kenya. Almost a half century later, their home, “The Steep”, was renamed the Aberdare Country Club and opened for guests.

All the rooms at The Aberdare Country Club are in the form of cottages and one standard suite. The cottages are as follows:

Ashnil Samburu Camp is a luxury tented set in the spectacular backdrop drop of the Mighty Ol Olokwe mountain fronting Ewaso Nyiro River. The 30 exclusive luxury Tents are spread out along the shady banks of the river under a thick stand of doum Palms.

It features an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by sun lounges, a garden and a Lounge bar offering views of the African savannah. Each tent features a decked Terrance with views of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The restaurant offers views of the river and serves a variety of menus comprising of Oriental, traditional and international cuisines. Set in one hundred and fifty acres of grassland studded with Acacia bushes and trees, the resort is not only home to our resident giraffe, waterbuck and both Vervet and Colobus monkeys, but it is also a night stop for the hippos when they leave the lake every night to come and trim the grass on our expansive lawns.

There are 21 cottages built in a crescent shape, and each has 4 rooms, 2 on the ground and 2 at the top, which totals to 84 rooms.

  • 2 of these rooms are suitable for the physically challenged.
  • 6 of the 21 cottages have inter-connecting rooms on the ground floor.

The exterior walls of the cottages have stone walls giving it character and creepers and bougainvilleas add a lot of colour. The same stone work is carried into the rooms, and is the exterior bathroom wall. The banister going up the top floor is wrought iron as well and the same creepers and bougainvilleas are entwined around them.

Our double storey guest cottages with their ingeniously designed roofs gently sweep away from one side of the main building to form a crescent which leads towards the lake shore. While the upstairs guest rooms have a single king size bed and the downstairs ones have two queen size beds, both have one thing in common and that is an extraordinary amount of space as well as lavishly appointed bathrooms.

  • Ground floor rooms have 2 queen size beds and a sunken living room at the front which opens out on to the beautifully manicured lawns. They also have sunken bath tubs and bidets.
  • Top floor rooms have 1 king size bed and in front of it a balcony which has a beautifully designed wrought iron railing and furniture to match. This faces the lawns as well. The bathrooms have shower cubicles and bidets.

All rooms have large frontal windows; televisions; mini-bars; telephones; electronic safes; tea and coffee making facilities; and spacious, open air verandas.

  • Day 1 – Aberdares: On arrival at the Somak Safari Lounge, you can freshen up and store any additional luggage before departing for the Aberdares (180 km). Arrive in time for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing, or on a nature walk with the resident naturalist (weather permitting). Overnight : Aberdare Country Club. Meals : Lunch and Dinner.

  • Day 2 – Samburu: Drive north across the equator to the Samburu National Reserve (190 km). Lunch before a late afternoon game drive. Overnight : Ashnil Samburu Camp. Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  • Day 3 – Samburu: Morning and late afternoon game drives in this open savannah which is traversed by the Ewaso Nyiro River. The river is populated by hippos and crocodiles, whilst the park is home to a host of animals including several species which are rarely seen in numbers elsewhere, including Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffes and long-necked gerenuks. Overnight : Ashnil Samburu Camp. Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  • Day 4 – Aberdares: Drive to your lodge in time for lunch (240 km). Spend the afternoon viewing game from the lodge, or join a nature walk led by a local guide (payable locally and weather permitting). Overnight : Serena Mountain Lodge. Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  • Day 5 – Lake Nakuru/naivasha: After breakfast, descend into the Great Rift Valley and continue to Lake Nakuru Lodge (240 km). Lunch. Afternoon game drive in the national park. Drive to Lake Naivasha (80 km - approximately 1 hour). Overnight : Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge. Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  • Days 6 – Masai Mara: Drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve (320 km). Arrive in time for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive. Overnight : Ashnil Mara Camp. Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  • Day 7 – Masai Mara: Enjoy an early morning game drive followed by breakfast at the lodge. Alternatively, take an early morning balloon flight over the Mara followed by a 'bubbly' bush breakfast (optional extra). After lunch, relax before a late afternoon game drive. Overnight : Ashnil Mara Camp. Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  • Day 8 – Depart: After breakfast, return to Nairobi by road (300 km), or fly from the Masai Mara to Nairobi: morning flight (price on request); lunch in the Masai Mara and afternoon flight (price on request). Meals : Breakfast.
